This gelatin agar medium was used in the identification of the bacteria Vibrio cholerae, the causal agent of cholera.



Until the 19th century, cholera was confined to the Indian sub-continent. There, cholera outbreaks are seasonal with one or two peaks per year. From this region, cholera has spread throughout the world seven times since 1817.
