This is a dorsal view of the “soft tick” Carios kelleyi, formerly Ornithodoros kelleyi, or the “Bat Tick”.



Though normally C. kelleyi is parasitic towards bats, it has been shown to bite humans when bat hosts are not available, as in during times of bat migration. When in search of hibernation caves the mammals leave human habitation such as dwellings.
