This child is displaying what is called “flag sign” hair brought on by protein malnutrition.
The flag sign for protein malnutrition sometimes involves alternating light and dark bands of color along individual hair fibers. Other symptoms that may be present are hair loss, pinched and wizened expression, and thin, papery dark skin.
