
This scientist is looking into a microscope at during a 1980 Legionnaire’s disease study.

The discovery of bacteria from the genus Legionella came in 1976 when an outbreak of pneumonia at an American Legion convention led to 29 deaths. The etiologic agent was named Legionella pneumophila, which placed it in its very own genus.
