This thin film micrograph depicts a mature Plasmodium malariae trophozoite, using Giemsa stain; Mag. 1125X.

The P. malariae trophozoite is normal to 3/4X in size. Rarely is there Ziemann's stippling (under certain staining conditions), amongst a compact cytoplasm. There is a large chromatin mass with occasional band forms, and coarse, dark-brown pigment.
