This photomicrograph shows a Plasmodium falciparum parasite in the ring stage, and containing Maurer’s dots.

Plasmodium falciparum rings have delicate cytoplasm and 1 or 2 small chromatin dots. Infected RBCs are not enlarged, and RBCs with multiple rings are often found in P. falciparum.
