This blood smear photomicrograph reveals a growing Plasmodium ovale trophozoite within a fimbriated oval RBC.

P. ovale trophozoites have a sturdy cytoplasm, large chromatin dots, and can be compact to slightly amoeboid in shape. Red blood cells are normal sized to slightly enlarged, by 25%, may be round to oval, and are sometimes fimbriated.
