Note the resemblance between the algae Prototheca filamenta to a fungal organism due to its mycelia-like filaments.
Members of this genus Prototheca at times cause illnesses in people infecting skin, lymph nodes, eyes, myocardium, kidneys, and muscle. It resembles a fungus under the microscope, but is an achlorophyllous mutant of the green alga Chlorella.
