
This micrograph reveals an intranuclear inclusion body in a heart section from a patient with diphtheria-related myocarditis.

In approximately 25 percent of patients with diphtheria, a toxin produced by Corynebacterium diphtheria bacteria causes inflammation of the myocardium, which is the most common and most worrisome complication.
