This is a ventral view of the “soft tick” Carios kelleyi, formerly Ornithodoros kelleyi, or the “Bat Tick”.

In Iowa, this tick has been known to bite humans, though the C. kelleyi is normally associated with bats, which act as its host until the bats decide to migrate back to caves to hibernate leaving the ticks free to attach themselves to a human host.
