This micrograph depicts a hookworm rhabditiform-staged larva, which represents its early 1st to 2nd stage of development.

Hookworm eggs are passed in the stool, and under favorable conditions, larvae hatch in 1 - 2 days. The released rhabditiform larvae grow in the feces and/or the soil, and after 5 - 10 days, they become filariform (3rd-stage) larvae that are infective.
