This photomicrograph depicts a fertilized egg of the parasite Ascaris lumbricoides.

Embryonated, fertilized eggs become infective after 18 days to several weeks. If ingested, larvae, i.e., immature worms can hatch from the eggs and cause the intestinal infection “Ascariasis”, which infects children more often than adults.
