This photomicrograph shows a red blood cell being infected by Plasmodium vivax during the mature trophozoite stage.
As the parasite increases in size, the ring morphology disappears, and becomes what is referred to as a mature trophozoite. The trophozoite of P. vivax is ameboid in shape, and the enlarged infected erythrocyte contains numerous Schuffner’s dots.
