This photomicrograph depicts a compact Plasmodium malariae parasite in its ring stage with double dots.

After this initial replication in the liver (exo-erythrocytic schizogony), the parasites undergo asexual multiplication in the RBCs (erythrocytic schizogony). During their ring stage, trophozoites mature into schizonts, rupturing to release merozoites.
